BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH WTF

OKAY -- ATTENTION -- I BELIEVE IT IS TIME FOR MY ANNUAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH RANT----

i.e. http://www.nbcam.org/

Honestly, I don't know why it annoys me so much. OH WAIT I DO.

Maybe it is because of the local hissy-fit over it every stinking year.

It starts with annoying melodramatic radio ads.

Then the TV ads with the pink people running relays for 3 days.

Then I go to the grocery store and not one, but TWO aisles are dedicated to "PINK!" "GO PINK!" -- pink water bottles, pink Mike Hard's lemonade (yes, alcohol), pink potato chips, pink t shirts, pink chicken marinades (!?!?!?!), --- AND THEY ONLY HAVE PINK SHOPPING BAGS!! PINK! Shopping!! BAGS!! No other bags to be found. In all of Haggens.

I drove by the local shopping center- the FORKLIFT was painted pink for breast cancer awareness.

I drove by the local Vietnamese dry cleaners - PINK ribbons on their dry cleaning hangers --

The celebrities are blabbing about it on every station and every little ceremony they make up for themselves even though they don't even know what they're talking about:

Oh i could go on, and ON, and ON! Pink everywhere! On yogurt! On brooms! On makeup! On alcohol! What the hell!!

LET ME REMIND YOU of the:

Top 10 Causes of Death for Women in the United States‡

The graph below shows how breast cancer compares to other common causes of death in women of all ages.

Top 10 causes of death for women in the United States.

The graph shows that the top 10 causes of death for women in the United States are—
1 Diseases of heart 329,238
2 Cerebrovascular diseases 86,993
3 Lung and bronchus cancer 69,078
4 Chronic lower respiratory disease 68,497
5 Alzheimer's disease 51,039
6 Accidents (unintentional injury) 41,426
7 Breast cancer 41,116
8 Diabetes mellitus 38,581
9 Influenza and pneumonia 34,949
10 Colorectal cancer 26,224

Wait... what's that? The top two killers of not only women, but men also, are cardiovascular? Really? How 'bout that. Huh. Really. WOW. Wait... breast cancer isn't even the top cancer? Really? Wow! How 'bout that. Huh. Wow. Really.

So great... the Komen people or whoever they are are getting this great research funding... and they don't know how to find the cause of breast cancer. Oh and they treat it like other cancers with barbaric medicine and chemo and radiation. Oh and it comes back so your breasts get cut off.

On the other hand, there is preventable, PREVENTABLE cardiovascular disease!! You just have to be aware and get screened! Look at those top 3 on the graph - QUIT SMOKING.... KNOW YOUR CHOLESTEROL.... AVOID type II diabetes... GET A STRESS TEST.... CONTROL YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE.... GET SCREENED FOR ATHEROSCLEROSIS WITH A SIMPLE ULTRASOUND.

Still have a clogged artery, can't fight the genetics? We have stents. and bypass. and so many many many things... and none of it involves cutting off body tissues.

I mean, serious Seattle, Washington, United States, North America.... you have a top killer, far more deadly and prevalant than breast cancer, cardiovascular disease which is also mostly preventable, and you want to frickin smoke and eat and drink your way to death. And buy your smokes and eats and drinks in F'in PINK SHOPPING BAGS.

THAT is what annoys me at the store, and on the radio, and on the TV. All these well-meaning people running around with out of control type II diabetes and high cholesterol with their pink t-shirts on just waiting for a huge myocardial infarction.

at least some people try to fight the breast cancer consumerism... but obviously without much success. And these are women who have fought the cancer themselves!

Now don't get me wrong. I know a lot of women who have fought breast cancer and some have lost the fight. It is horrific, and personal, and just awful. I also know a lot of people who have had other types of cancer. Prostate. Colon. Skin. Many family members have died slow painful deaths from cancer. Research and funding is so important... but raising "Awareness"... by using consumerism? Swiffer? Alcohol? Pink shopping bags?

Ridiculous.

mawwiage

I've been appreciating my husband a lot this week. I really really love being married and it is so much more than I thought it would be - exceeding my expectations in the happiness and wellness departments. So when I saw this questionnaire making the rounds I said hey why not.

What are your middle names?
My middle name is Mae. It was my Aunt Freda's middle name and my grandma's middle name, and eerily similar to my mom's middle name. And it's not spelled with a Y, people. I don't know why it's not ask them hispanic folks.
Josh's middle name is Emerson and it's a family name, too. He doesn't know where his ancestors came from so don't ask, no seriously he has like no heritage so it seems.

How long have you been together?
Been married 2 1/2 years - I think we've been dating since like 2003.

How long did you know each other before you started dating?
Since Fall 2000 - I first recall meeting him at school (community college) as he walked up the steps to the courtyard building and my friend jonathan introduced him to me. I remember thinking when started walking up "Oh yay! A friend closer to my age!" (I was 16 at the time and thought he might be 17 or 18) but when he got more into view I thought, "Oh, just another older guy like jonathan . blah." (cause apparently 20 is SO old!) That pretty much is where our friendship stayed for like two years. That old guy jonathan hangs out with.

Who asked whom out?
Unclear. Mutual decision.

How old are each of you?
I'm 24. He's old. Kidding he's four years older than me.

Whose siblings do you see the most?
His. Duhhhh I'm an only child! But we see my family more, cuz they live close by.

Which situation is the hardest on you as a couple?
He's a full time pastor and I'm a full time RN - we work with time and emotionally-demanding people groups.

Did you go to the same school?
We went to the same community college and even commuted there together while we were friends. Unfortunately we only started dating when he lived far away. So, that was kinda lame, for like three years!!

Are you from the same home town?
Noooooo. No. No.

Who is smarter?
Josh can like, read and study and stuff and then teach people and be all interested and committed to it. I read and study to take tests well and learn science and regurgitate and then promptly forgettaboutit.

Who is the most sensitive?
He has pretty tough skin. I think as long as he feels he's respected he's fine with anything. I'm the woman who comes home from work all blubbery.

Where do you eat out most as a couple?
Mmmmmmmmmmm mexican food. But we try to hit all the local restaraunts and try something new.

Where is the furthest you two have traveled together as a couple?
Chicago? Oklahoma? Boston? Which one of those is farther?

Who has the craziest exes?
Wow it really is a toss up. I have crazy bipolar guy from high school, but he has crazy girl from high school... I think I win, though. I mean, who can say they get a call from their boyfriend from Local County Psych Ward? When he's talking about the spots he sees on the cieling that are going to eat the elephants?

Who has the worst temper?
Me maybe? We're both too easy going. I'll revisit this question after we have children and probably say "me!!! I have the worst!! aughh!!"

Who does the cooking?
Me. Well I prefer to do the cooking. Josh is a great cook. I have to yell get out of my kitchen a lot.

Who is the neat-freak?
NOT MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. EVER. He is OCD about neatness.

Who is more stubborn?
Depends on what it's about. I'm stubborn about uhm, everything, but not for very long. He's stubborn about particular things, for like, ever.

Who hogs the bed?
Josh. Which is why we got a bigger bed.

Who wakes up earlier?
Josh. By like 20 minutes.

Where was your first date?
Goodies - candy shoppe in Bremerton. I think???

Who is more jealous?
Josh probably since I don't pay attention

How long did it take to get serious?
Him being gone for 6 months on active duty with ARMY

Who eats more?
Josh eats bigger meals but I eat more frequent smaller meals

Who does the laundry?
I'm supposed to..... and if he does bad things happen to the whites. Pink, bad things.

Who's better with the computer?
Josh.

Who drives when you are together?
Josh. I *hate* driving.
