Pie
Wish I would've had pie at my wedding.
There is a national pie day?
There's a pie council?
I don't know if I can be this serious about pie.

happy 20th birthday casey
memorial weekend was pretty good, even though it rained like crazy almost the entire time. we celebrated casey's birthday on saturday which was fun. she was afraid the sombrero at the restaurant was going to give her lice or something.
our town gets kind of crazy busy on memorial day weekend because of the Ski to Sea race, which is pretty cool and unique, started way back in 1911. a lot of people are serious competitors and it gets international participants, but the people i know who compete are just my regular joe coworkers nstuff. the legs of the race are very west coasty:
Cross Country Ski; Downhill Ski/Snowboard; Running; Road Bike; Canoe; Mountain Bike; Kayak
yah i stayed inside. cuz i dont like, do, any of those things. well i supposed i canoe, but definitely not down a mountain river. and i dont kayak in the ocean unless its santa barbara's bay.

sometimes i just listen
i miss working with the military sometimes because the VA patients tend to have colorful stories of war times or just their youth in general was interesting. old guys just have cool stories, you know? a lot of my really elderly patients up here where i live now are more of the farmer/pioneer/fisherman/oil-men types who moved up here back in the day when there was just mountains and trees and eskimos and whatnots and they were still speaking dutch and german. not saying stories about tulips and cows aren't interesting, because they are. but it's ain't no south pacific tale.
anywho, excerpt from this AM, 0910, me starting an IV in a new place in this patient's arm and pushing a few IV drugs through it:
"Yeh, so anyway I told my oldest one there that I didn't need no doctor's visit, but he was right 'cause here I am gettin a heart valve replaced. But the doc said that it'll last 10 years so now my son is sorry i betcha cuz he won't git rid of me for a long time now! Hey, YOUCH! What're you doin in that arm anyway?"
"I just put in the new IV, the needle is out now its just the plastic cannula in your vein."
"Okay, so anyway I tell 'em last night I wanted some ice cream, but they didn't bring me any."
"I could go for some ice cream right now."
"what! you kids! it's 9 in the morning!"
"Well I'm 5 months pregnant so I can have ice cream when I want to."
"Aw well I guess I that's true. Can't argue with that logic. When I married my wife she had 3 children, an' I had 2 childrens, and then we had another children, and they was an army. I mean an ARMY. 3 girls and 3 boys. Yessir that was my oldest son I was tellin you about. And that was 39 years ago we got married, and we're still married, so we did something right. You know when you can stay together with that many kids and trying to merge two families you doin something right. And then we had a baby. You know I'm not a religious man, you know I'm not like some where I go off believin' in some myth about some thing or someone or some religion, but babies, I mean, wow, babies are just... just... "
"A miracle?"
"Yah! Babies are just miracles. I mean, you got you there, a person, and your husband over there, a person, and then you mess around, doin' married people thing, and BAM! a new life. I new formed separate person. Just like made and different and unique and just a new person. there is just no explanation for that anywhere, how that happens to be, well except for maybe.... but like I said I'm not religious. but there's just no denying those sorts of things when you look at a baby."
(i switch vials to the next injection)
"Yessirree and those birds in the nest, they do whatever birds do to make eggs, I don't know how birds do it, but they do their thing and there is precious little eggs up there a few days later. And then cute little baby birds come out. So don't you forget (he shakes his finger at me with his free hand) that that baby is a special, special thing. there is just nothing like that, and it is special."
"Yes sir!"
"Yup, my kids are an army. they are alright now though. i don't mind them so much now. it's kind of nice having so many when you're an old feller like me."

made it
they were supposed to be 8 hour, but ended up being longer than that.
which i hated, but whatever, that's the kind of profession i'm in.
still sick like pregnant sick most of the time. i'm eating all normal foods now though, and just forcing them down my throat. at this point i'm like meh, what sticks sticks and what doesn't, dosen't. just try againnnn with a new foooood.
i bore myself talking about this.
in other news, we had the first little ultrasound thing this week - baby no longer looks like a blob, but a real baby, and baby was very modest and we didn't get a look at the gender. my coworkers in the ultrasound department are anxious to have an ultrasound fiesta on my abdomen, which makes me laugh. (we don't usually get to look at anything cute on the ultrasound screens at work trust me).
oh and someone already told me that i'm going against God's Natural Plan and Will For My Life by wanting to find out the gender via an ultrasound screen before the baby is born. so feel free to leave comments like that on my blog also, cuz i'd just love to hear more about that /sarcasm. no seriously, stuff like that really falls on deaf ears when it's told me i think - instead of me being like ORLY? TELL me MORE holy spiritual person! I'm like, uh, well, you know I've already crossed that bridge by like, being a transplant nurse right, i mean, you know, like harvesting organs from dead people and putting them into other alive people. i'm guessing you have a problem with things like this too, yes? ORLY? thought so.
also, you need to have a little humor in your life. i mean, i've had a few "it's a girl!" pre-birth and then baby comes out and they're like.. "Oh, it's a boy!" so see, there, you can still be surprised.
but i supposed this is the beginning of what is to come, me living in the real world and also Religion World. most people i know are very reasonable sorts, but there are those out there (who i never know personally but think they know me) who will love to tell me that I'm raising my child all wrong, because they are wearing blue shoes on a Tuesday, or picking their nose on a Friday - I never really know what to say to these types. I guess I'm like my dad in this way that I just like to say something other ridiculous and almost off-topic that is likely to offend, for example "i transplant organs for a living, are you an organ donor?" or something stupid. probably not the right approach.

that kind of sucks.
makes me feel stupid stupid stupid.
on a brighter note, i am feeling better today, besides the usual pregnancy gagging nausea throwing up if i eat too fast thing. i went to church service last night and i went to olive garden afterwards! i saw the outside world! people! there is hope!
