my first baby email spam
who knows how i got on some dumb spam list, usually gmail is pretty good at sorting out stuff like this, but i must've signed up for some baby thing and, yup, my first baby email spam!
"New Huggies Jeans Diapers Have Arrived!"
"Get 'em while they're HOT!"
"Summer's coolest look for your baby!"

Seeeeeeriously. Disturbing.

sometimes i just listen
patients often just start talking to me whilst i am doing some nurse procedurey type thing on them/near them, and i usually like listening to them, for various reasons. first of all, it keeps them calm to keep them talking and keeps their mind off what i'm doing to them. second, it's usually entertaining for me. most patients are elderly and they don't have any problem speaking their mind or telling crazy stories - stuff like that. third, i often walk away with a story or a memory they have held that i will remember for a long time.
i miss working with the military sometimes because the VA patients tend to have colorful stories of war times or just their youth in general was interesting. old guys just have cool stories, you know? a lot of my really elderly patients up here where i live now are more of the farmer/pioneer/fisherman/oil-men types who moved up here back in the day when there was just mountains and trees and eskimos and whatnots and they were still speaking dutch and german. not saying stories about tulips and cows aren't interesting, because they are. but it's ain't no south pacific tale.
anywho, excerpt from this AM, 0910, me starting an IV in a new place in this patient's arm and pushing a few IV drugs through it:
"Yeh, so anyway I told my oldest one there that I didn't need no doctor's visit, but he was right 'cause here I am gettin a heart valve replaced. But the doc said that it'll last 10 years so now my son is sorry i betcha cuz he won't git rid of me for a long time now! Hey, YOUCH! What're you doin in that arm anyway?"
"I just put in the new IV, the needle is out now its just the plastic cannula in your vein."
"Okay, so anyway I tell 'em last night I wanted some ice cream, but they didn't bring me any."
"I could go for some ice cream right now."
"what! you kids! it's 9 in the morning!"
"Well I'm 5 months pregnant so I can have ice cream when I want to."
"Aw well I guess I that's true. Can't argue with that logic. When I married my wife she had 3 children, an' I had 2 childrens, and then we had another children, and they was an army. I mean an ARMY. 3 girls and 3 boys. Yessir that was my oldest son I was tellin you about. And that was 39 years ago we got married, and we're still married, so we did something right. You know when you can stay together with that many kids and trying to merge two families you doin something right. And then we had a baby. You know I'm not a religious man, you know I'm not like some where I go off believin' in some myth about some thing or someone or some religion, but babies, I mean, wow, babies are just... just... "
"A miracle?"
"Yah! Babies are just miracles. I mean, you got you there, a person, and your husband over there, a person, and then you mess around, doin' married people thing, and BAM! a new life. I new formed separate person. Just like made and different and unique and just a new person. there is just no explanation for that anywhere, how that happens to be, well except for maybe.... but like I said I'm not religious. but there's just no denying those sorts of things when you look at a baby."
(i switch vials to the next injection)
"Yessirree and those birds in the nest, they do whatever birds do to make eggs, I don't know how birds do it, but they do their thing and there is precious little eggs up there a few days later. And then cute little baby birds come out. So don't you forget (he shakes his finger at me with his free hand) that that baby is a special, special thing. there is just nothing like that, and it is special."
"Yes sir!"
"Yup, my kids are an army. they are alright now though. i don't mind them so much now. it's kind of nice having so many when you're an old feller like me."

made it
i worked 5 out of 5 shifts this week
they were supposed to be 8 hour, but ended up being longer than that.
which i hated, but whatever, that's the kind of profession i'm in.
still sick like pregnant sick most of the time. i'm eating all normal foods now though, and just forcing them down my throat. at this point i'm like meh, what sticks sticks and what doesn't, dosen't. just try againnnn with a new foooood.
i bore myself talking about this.
in other news, we had the first little ultrasound thing this week - baby no longer looks like a blob, but a real baby, and baby was very modest and we didn't get a look at the gender. my coworkers in the ultrasound department are anxious to have an ultrasound fiesta on my abdomen, which makes me laugh. (we don't usually get to look at anything cute on the ultrasound screens at work trust me).
oh and someone already told me that i'm going against God's Natural Plan and Will For My Life by wanting to find out the gender via an ultrasound screen before the baby is born. so feel free to leave comments like that on my blog also, cuz i'd just love to hear more about that /sarcasm. no seriously, stuff like that really falls on deaf ears when it's told me i think - instead of me being like ORLY? TELL me MORE holy spiritual person! I'm like, uh, well, you know I've already crossed that bridge by like, being a transplant nurse right, i mean, you know, like harvesting organs from dead people and putting them into other alive people. i'm guessing you have a problem with things like this too, yes? ORLY? thought so.
also, you need to have a little humor in your life. i mean, i've had a few "it's a girl!" pre-birth and then baby comes out and they're like.. "Oh, it's a boy!" so see, there, you can still be surprised.
but i supposed this is the beginning of what is to come, me living in the real world and also Religion World. most people i know are very reasonable sorts, but there are those out there (who i never know personally but think they know me) who will love to tell me that I'm raising my child all wrong, because they are wearing blue shoes on a Tuesday, or picking their nose on a Friday - I never really know what to say to these types. I guess I'm like my dad in this way that I just like to say something other ridiculous and almost off-topic that is likely to offend, for example "i transplant organs for a living, are you an organ donor?" or something stupid. probably not the right approach.

dentist
my adventures for today included a trip to the dentist. oh joy!
i had to get some work done. drilling, pasting in fillings, yuck.
the right side of my face is still numb.
in other news i decided to pick up some secret shopping again. i hated working for starbucks so i totally won't be doing that probably ever again, but there are some other interesting shops out there to do. the hotel ones are a little much for me, they are all in Canada usually which is fun but I still don't feel well in the car. i think the economy must be a little better because all of the sudden the pay that these shops offer are just a little too tantalizing. and i've started choosing ones outside of my normal Applebees, sandwich shop type things. Like today I had to go to a bank and inquire about things. Tomorrow I go take a picture of a cell phone display at a store. It's like wow, I get paid to do this, niiice.
In other, other news a few weeks ago i started feeling baby flutters, which I was like ohmygosh! baby flutters! best thing ever! how cute! my little person is becoming a kicking twitching person! aww! BUT..... But.......... THIS WEEK.... it was become little jabs. Jab jab jab, jab. jab. jab! jab jab jab. I dunno a lot about like ligament uterine anatomy or whatever (hey nursing school i pretty much ignored the OBGYN rotation) but there is some spot on the right side that is like super painful, and so every little kick or headbutt is like, well, super painful. But just in that one spot. But baby finds that spot. Constantly. So, anyway, I'm still hoping to gain a few pounds, or a few 20 lbs, since I'm still so underweight, and hope that will help things, since I am feeling like a wafer and my abdominal wall feels wafer thin to me, too. I didn't think I would be one of those people woman types to rub cocoa butter on my tummy, but dude, it is like totally getting stretched out, like major ouch, and then I rubbed cocoa butter on it, and it felt better. So i was like hey, I should do this more often.
p.s. i dont believe there is any way to prevent stretch marks so uhm yah dont get me started on the pregnany advertising industry. (although i do enjoy myself a Preggie Pop TM time to time, Cass!)
everyone at work thinks I'm having a boy, and so does Josh. I have no womanly intuition to offer at all, I have no idea, but I think I'll just say girl, so that I can be that one person who was like "ha ha I was right, you guys can suck it! yah! I'm the mom! I know stuff!" but uhhh yah, really it's a 50/50 chance there. my parents want to give me and josh old baby stuff from garage sales, and josh's parents want to give us a money to buy nursery furniture from The Pottery Barn or some such Swanky Baby Boutique. aye dios mio.
well that's enough rambling for today. i will TRY .....TRY to update my blog more. ive been really good with my flickr stream lately. :) just like im going to TRY, TRY to clean my house and put laundry away.

currently
+ my husband is amazing. the past few months have been so crappy, i've been so sick, it was stressful not knowing if i had a job the next day or not, it was stressful sometimes not being able to go to the job i had because i was throwing up like 8 x a day, but he's been like, amazing. caring for me, helping me, holding me, driving me around... yah.i don't think i could say thank you enough.
+ i am officially off the lay off list at work right now... and have a 'new' (*coughexactlythesame*) position and new team to work with
+ i'm not throwing up as much. i can eat regular meals right now with the assistance of some anti-nausea meds.
+ my mom-in-law sent me cute baby booties in the mail
+ i felt baby flutters for the first time!
+ i was able to go with my handsome husband and favorite friends to california and have a wonderful time, and see more wonderful friends who live there. <3
+ i saw sunshine
- i came home to cold rain and wind
+ i opened a fun present with yuppie preggie pops in it that cheered me up
- it made me miss good friends
+ i went out to lunch with newer friends and teased a seagull...found out said new friends are really really really environmentalists/animal rights advocates
+ i teased the seagull more
+ i'm almost back up to my regular weight. 5 lbs to go. feeling less dizzy these days. weird thing is, i totally don't fit into my regular pants, because of a very obvious baby bump.
+ my coworker did an ultrasound on me so i could see my wittle baby
- baby was sneaky and hiding his/her gender
+ i really like my tea and teacups
+ now that i'm feeling better i want to start hanging out with my friends again
+ :-)
